Professor George Hanna, a researcher at Imperial College, and his team conducted an in-depth study of 335 patient breath samples taken at random. Of these patients, 163 were diagnosed with esophageal or gastric cancer. Using a mass spectrometer, the researchers identified and quantified the specific components of the breath sample and analyzed 15 of the volatile organic compounds. The results showed that the contents of five volatile organic compounds such as butyric acid, caproic acid, n-butyraldehyde, furfural, and valeric acid were significantly associated with tumors. Based on these five compounds, the researchers developed a gastric cancer risk prediction model that includes five variables. After testing, the accuracy rate can reach 85%.
