Does dysmenorrhea really reduce intelligence?

Dysmenorrhoea is a common condition that afflicts many women. Except for discomfort and nausea, a new study found that dysmenorrhea may even affect women’s intelligence.

Researchers at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom conducted computer tests on 52 women suffering from dysmenorrhea and found that dysmenorrhea would impair their cognitive performance. In computer testing, they mainly tested their ability to perform choices, attention spans, and diversion between different tasks. Due to dysmenorrhea, the length of attention of these women who were tested decreased, their performance worsened, and their scores decreased.

The chief researcher, Dr. Ed Keo, of the Department of Psychology at the University of Bath, said that all kinds of pain are very common and can cause great disruption to people's daily lives. Dr. Keo said, "Experimental results show that the effects of pain are not limited to sensory perceptions, and may even affect people's thinking ability."
