Associate Professor Matthew Gdovin of the Department of Biology at the University of Texas at San Antonio recently published a study in the journal The Journal of Clinical Oncology, which shows a new way to clear cancer cells.
This new method injects the chemical substance nitrobenzaldehyde into the tumor, and then the nitrobenzaldehyde diffuses in the tumor tissue. Then, a beam of ultraviolet light is irradiated onto the tumor tissue, causing the internal cell acidity to greatly increase, thereby causing the cancer cell to die. After 2 hours of action, 95% of cancer cells died of suicide.

Gdovin tested the efficacy of this method in one of the most malignant and most difficult to treat cancers, triple negative breast cancer. Studies in mice in the laboratory have shown that this treatment can organize cancer cell growth and prolong survival by a factor of two.

Traditional chemotherapy targets all cells in the body, and some of these chemotherapy methods attempt to keep the cancer cells acidic, thereby killing cancer cells. This is why many cancer patients lose hair and become weak during chemotherapy. The method of this study can target cancer tissues more precisely.
Gdovin hopes that this non-invasive method can help patients who are unable to undergo surgery, such as tumors that occur in the brainstem, aorta or spine. This method enables the patient to receive the maximum dose of treatment at the treatment site.
