Cargill, a US food and agriculture conglomerate, announced that it has completed the first complete cattle genome joint research with the life sciences company MetaMorphix, and has developed new tools to identify whether cattle can meet consumer demand for quality. In June 2002, MetaMorphix signed an advanced research and development agreement with Caprock Cattle Feeders and Excel Corporation, a subsidiary of Cargill, to jointly develop tools that can identify the superior characteristics of cattle and apply them to commercial production. MetaMorphix used a complete bovine genome combination study for a certain number of commercial beef cattle and discovered specific genes related to the superior quality of cattle in the bovine genome. Cargill explained that the new tool will test its use in commercial cattle production in its subsidiary Caprock feedlots.
