"At present, there are many companies that can perform human genome sequencing in China, but the entire set of equipment including the reagents are purchased from the United States." During the two sessions, Zhang Dexing, deputy director of the Beijing Institute of Genetics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, said in an interview with the Science and Technology Daily. One person does a whole genome sequencing, which costs $1,000 in the US and $1,500 in China. The cost difference lies in critical equipment.
In 2013, Huada Gene acquired the US Gene Sequencing Company because the instrument manufacturer that cooperated with Huada Gene used various excuses to delay and terminate the maintenance of purchased equipment, and also provided the clinically used reagents with high price. The price has nearly doubled, and the equipment of nearly 100 million US dollars of Huada’s gene is almost paralyzed. "If you spend more money, you don't know that the core technology is the 'card neck." Zhang Dexing feels that the key technology is not practical.
Human genome sequencing is the foundation of precision medicine. It is predicted that by 2020, China's gene therapy market will reach 10 billion US dollars. "The cost of human genome sequencing is slowing down." Zhang Dexing said that in 2007, a human genome sequencing would cost $1 million, in 2011 it would fall to $4,000, and in the first half of 2014 it would fall to $1,000. As technology continues to break, costs can drop to $100 or even lower. A comprehensive understanding of your genetic information, and everyone's sequencing of their own genome is a trend.
The Human Genome Project was jointly funded by the National Institutes of Health and the US Department of Energy for $3 billion. More than 1,000 scientists from the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, and China completed the project for 13 years, eventually costing $3.8 billion. An assessment published in Nature in June 2013 said that the Human Genome Project brought nearly $1 trillion in economic returns to the United States, more than 260 times the input.
Zhang Dexing said that human genome sequencing can be called the "moon landing plan" of life sciences, but from the "13th Five-Year Plan", there is no overall plan for the country to carry out relevant key technologies. At present, it is impossible for a certain institution to achieve technological breakthroughs. It is necessary to rely on the state to provide stable support and organize various fields to achieve synergy. For example, some high-precision manufacturing technologies, we can hardly produce materials below 10 nanometers, and the UK has already overcome materials below 5 nanometers. "Once a comprehensive breakthrough, all equipment has to be updated." Zhang Dexing believes that if you do not master the key technologies, you will not be able to catch up with them.
"If you make strategic investments now, you may save huge medical expenses in the future, maybe tens of billions or more." Zhang Dexing said that he does not know how much he needs to invest, but even if it is 5 to 1 billion dollars, it is worth it.
