Although most of us have the experience of sleeping and dreaming at night, what wakes up is nothing but a false memory. However, American song creator Dion McGregor is not the same. He can not only clearly remember the details of the dream, but even mutter in his sleep, it seems to be able to retell his dreams in real time.
His strange habits were recorded in detail by the assistants. In the 1960s, his experience of dreaming was also burned, called "Dion McGregor's Dream World." After Mr. McGregor's death for 20 years, researchers at Harvard Medical School still hope to find the mystery of people's dreams through these records, and how it relates to our dreams.
Mr. McGregor's dream record is very detailed and accurate, just like telling everything happening in a dream in real time.
Maybe you will worry, how do we know that Mr. McGregor is not making a fake, in fact it is hard to prove, and he passed away in 1994. However, the researchers still did not falsify according to some clues Mr. McGregor.
When his secret was first publicized in 1964, Random House also planned to publish a book for this purpose. In order to ensure that his habit is true, Random House specifically asked the psychiatrist to consult McGregor. According to doctors, Mr. McGregor is very sensible and has no possibility of fraud.
So, if McGregor's sleep record is assumed to be true, what clues can we get from it?
By analyzing Mr. McGregor's 294 sleeper records and other people's "dreams," Barrett and others wanted to know whether McGregor completely recounted his dreams and whether he was in a special sleep state when he was talking.
Surprisingly, compared to other dreams, the dreams described in McGregor's dreams are more reasonable, and there are fewer contradictions and discontinuities between the plots. In addition, his dreams are relatively less intrusive, friendship, and sexual; however, self-denial and the number of female characters are higher than those of other people.
Barrett concluded two main reasons: First, Mr. McGregor's nightmare was not produced during the dreaming phase, but was produced in a special state before half-awake and half-sleeping.
Evidence supporting this hypothesis is that past research has shown that the brainwaves of our brains are different in their dreams or dreams. When talking in a sleep, the number of alpha waves in the brainwave is small.
In fact, in one interview, Mr. McGregor said that sleep researchers had recorded the characteristics of his brain's activity and found that there was a mixture of sleep and wakeful brain waves in his sleep. However, this is not tangible evidence.
The second explanation is that Mr. McGregor's constitution is quite special.
"Mr. McGregor is humorous and intelligent, and he is very gay in the entertainment industry. This may be the reason why his brainwave is different from others."
Currently, Barrett hopes to record the public's dreams through an app called "sleep talk phone" and compare it with Mr. McGregor's dream record. Regardless of success or failure, Mr. McGregor's dream record provides a valuable resource for us to study the mechanism of human sleep production. We should thank him here.
