Researchers said on Wednesday that a new gene, mcr-1, has been found in Chinese people and pigs that allows bacteria to be highly resistant to the last line of antibiotics. This gene is also found in some bacterial samples that may cause epidemics. .

Scientists say the findings are "worrying" and they call for an emergency restriction on the use of polymyxins. This type of antibiotic is widely used in animal husbandry.

“The use of polymyxins should be minimized as soon as possible, and all unnecessary use should be stopped,” said Laura Piddock, a professor of microbiology at the University of Birmingham in the UK, commenting on the findings.

Researchers led by Liu Jianhua, a professor at South China Agricultural University in China, discovered that the mcr-1 gene in plastids can be easily replicated and transmitted between different bacteria. They published the results of the study in the Lancet Infectious Diseases magazine.

The team has evidence of the transmission of this gene between common bacteria such as E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae.

They said that although this situation is currently limited to China, mcr-1 may also emulate other drug resistance genes and spread globally.

Piddock et al. said that global monitoring of mcr-1 resistance is critical to prevent the spread of bacteria resistant to polymyxin antibiotics.
