Application of automated packet drier in TEVA Pharmaceuticals

TEVA Pharmaceuticals, a global unregistered pharmaceutical manufacturer, has announced the desiccant packaging used in several of its products from the original small cans to small packets – not only has the operating costs been reduced, but Supply reliability has also improved. The company's plant in Sellersville, Pa., produces approximately 20 million packaging units per year. Here, zui is using a mobile high-speed automated desiccant packaging system developed by Multisorb Technologies, Inc. and Active-Pak Automation. TEVA expects a significant increase in line speed after replacing the desiccant package and will save the company $150,000 in raw material costs per year.

TEVA's global operations totaled approximately $250 million in sales for the company in 2003. Most TEVA products are sold to pharmaceutical chains such as CVS, Rite-Aid, Walgreen's, Wal-Mart, Eckerd, and pharmaceutical wholesalers such as AmeriSource Bergen, Cardinal Health and McKesson.

TEVA's business characteristics are characterized by a wide range of products. And as a manufacturer of unregistered trademarks, it is extremely important to maintain cost control and ensure product consistency and reliability.

John Abt, director of manufacturing operations at TEVA Pharmaceuticals (USA) in Sellersville, said: "We are the world's largest unregistered pharmaceutical manufacturing company, and we also have great research and development capabilities in the pharmaceutical industry. Our primary concern is It is necessary to deliver the product to the customer in a timely manner."

Moisture protection is extremely important for drug stability, especially for sensitive drugs. Michelle Keller, a project engineer at Sellersville, said: "Some drug types are particularly sensitive to moisture and degrade when degraded." She noted that the descending decomposition caused by moisture is particularly prone to occur in drugs that treat heart disease. Such as Enalapril Maleate and Moexipril HCl.

Kick off the can

TEVA used three small cans of different sizes to hold the desiccant, three-quarters of a gram, one gram and two grams. TEVA's priority is reliability and ease of loading. The company also encountered some tests when it was automated to put small cans in bottles. The funnel-shaped outlet blockage and the downtime of the production line have prevented TEVA from allowing the company's various production lines to reach the speed of operation. Abt said, “There is usually a 'small lip' when using a small jar made of mold, and this 'small lip' sometimes causes small jars to get stuck in the machine.”

Abt also pointed out that this has caused the production line to stop working many times.

Keller noted that the shortage of small can desiccant packaging is also a test for TEVA. “There is no reliable supply of small cans that forces us to look for alternatives,” she said. “When we knew that switching to small packages might help reduce costs, it immediately caught our attention.”

Multisorb's packet-type absorbent StripPax (registered trademark) is a packet-type desiccant that is recognized by the FDA-Food and Drug Administration as a small can desiccant equivalent. The lower average unit cost of the packet desiccant attracts TEVA, and the company can achieve and achieve other benefits, such as faster line speeds and the size of the packet desiccant can be flexibly changed. While a variety of approved desiccant sources are important to TEVA, it is another benefit to be able to obtain the various desiccants required by all companies from one supplier. After using the StripPax packet desiccant, it is not necessary to manually put the uncut packet desiccant into the product when there is a shortage of small cans. At the Sellersville plant, the desiccant loading step is now fully automated.

The packet desiccant placement equipment provided by Multisorb's subsidiary Active-Pak Automation (APA) provides a critical solution to the various reliability issues faced by TEVA. APA's high-speed equipment is designed to put StripPax desiccant at a line speed of 300 bottles per minute. As long as the width is between 15 and 50 mm and the length is between 30 and 100 mm, APA's equipment can use a variety of different sizes of packet desiccants. The APA equipment thus allows TEVA to use small packet desiccants of different sizes as needed so that it can be easily placed in the bottle and the need to remove the desiccant multiple times.

Keller said that "the three principles of the company's vision are 'quality, efficiency and speed', and upgrading our automated production line is a big leap forward."

Production line speed has increased

When placing small cans in a bottle in an automated manner, depending on the size of the bottle, the line speed will range from 25 bottles per minute to 75 bottles per minute. The "double falling" condition involved in a one gram small can desiccant often also affects the line speeds mentioned above.

APA's equipment enables faster line speeds, and its industrial technology also increases the reliability standards that can be achieved by putting together the StripPax desiccant. A variety of sensors, control devices and an advanced PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) in the APA device can eliminate the possibility of cutting out the small package and ensure the reliability of the step. And whether it is a small package of any size, the production line can be started at the appropriate speed. The machine operates with fail-safe, the “automatic failure prevention hazard” operation (any part of the machine will stop running and operate to return to a safe state), and each small package will be assumed. It was made wrong until the machine determines the length of the packet package until the cutting step. Unless confirmed by a series of sensors and controls, the machine does not assume that desiccant has been placed in the bottle. When the machine is aware of the problem (which is very unlikely), a cylinder that blocks the bottle will stretch out and prevent the bottle from continuing under the line.

APA's equipment also has the ability to put multiple small packages that have not been cut into the bottle at a high speed, giving more flexibility – just cut once each time. Another benefit of this machine is that it is easy to move. The portable APA machine unit can maintain more than two product lines and can be assigned as needed.

Regulations enable companies to convert quickly

The FDA regulations on lateral changes in pharmaceutical packaging have just been implemented, allowing TEVA to institutionalize changing desiccants almost immediately. Companies only need to provide citation documents in the FDA's long-term report. No stability testing is required before the change, and Multisorb also provides TEVA with all the comparisons between the previous small tank packaging and the new small packaging. The decision to change the TEVA has been determined by simply handing the information to the internal controller.

Keller said: "The trouble with changing the desiccant is to check the regulations and what documents need to be provided. Multisorb also provides us with the exact information needed in this regard. Changing from small cans to small packages is only one report per year. Simple changes, so basically it's about modifying the bill of materials and putting them on."

When all the information is available, the TEVA change decision will be finalized and approved within one month. In order to make the previous investment have a large return, TEVA used up all the remaining small cans of packaging; also installed and tested the new APA equipment.

Size and size are significant

TEVA was previously limited by the size of the three small tank desiccants. For example, large bottles require stronger desiccant protection to maintain stability within the bottle, which typically requires two ("double") small cans of desiccant to be placed. When two grams of small cans of desiccant are not easily placed in the mouth of a smaller vial, "double fall" is also required. The “double down” step will slow down the line unless additional capital equipment is installed, and the “double down” step will increase the total material cost compared to a large StripPax packet desiccant because the average of the StripPax desiccant is compared to The cost is only half.

The use of StripPax desiccant allows TEVA to avoid "double falling" when using large "family" bottles and neck bottles. TEVA now uses three different sizes of StripPax desiccant, but in order to simplify supply and logistics to improve efficiency, the company plans to use only two different sizes of desiccant.

Better customer service

The company's internal evaluation revealed that the replacement of the original small tank desiccant and the uncut packet desiccant into a continuous strip of StripPax desiccant can save the company an objective amount of cost. The amount saved is based on the current three white bottles of useful desiccant.

There are several products in TEVA that are in the research and development stage. The amount of desiccant used by the company may therefore multiply in a few years, so the amount that can be saved in a few years will increase significantly compared with the current one.

TEVA's APA portable feeders can cater to a variety of different packaging lines. To date, TEVA has switched from 20 different strengths to StripPax. The APA feeder has an easy-to-use human-machine interface, and the construction of each product can be simply selected and entered from here.

Abt said: “Multisorb has achieved very good results for us, and we expect this to continue.” “Multisorb helps us reduce costs, increase the speed of the production line and the time it takes for the machine to operate, and also enhances our ability to operate from all levels. Customer service. The various advantages we have achieved have improved our customer service standards."
