The four key elements of flowering grafting

The use of flowers and trees to graft flowers and trees has many advantages, such as maintaining the excellent characteristics of the female parent, short incubation period, and simple operation. To ensure the survival rate of flower grafting, the following four key elements must be observed:

First, select the appropriate grafting season. The grafting of flowers and trees should be carried out in the spring. Generally, it is best when the sap of the rootstock begins to flow; the buds can be carried out in the growing season of the entire flowers and trees, and the skin of the rootstock is the best when it is easy to peel.

Second, high-quality stock. The affinity of tree species and cuttings of rootstock is stronger, which is the premise and basis for the survival of flowers and trees. If the affinity of the two is not strong, the ability to generate healing tissue between the rootstock and the scion is weak, and new delivery tissues are difficult to form. Water and nutrients are not delivered in place, and grafting is likely to fail. Therefore, in the production of the general selection of the grafting of the present stock, you can also choose other tree species with strong affinity as rootstock (such as black pine as the rootstock of five-pin pine, peach, plum as the rootstock of plum, and the rootstock of kumquat as the water wax , privet do osmanthus rootstock, etc.). In general, young trees are the best choice for rootstock selection. However, if you want to quickly make old pile bonsai, you can only choose the old pile as the rootstock.

Third, properly handle the cuttings. It is best to choose strong, strong growth shoots as the cuttings on young trees that grow vigorously and are free of pests and diseases. For budding, most of the new shoots of the year's shoots are harvested, followed by picking; buds collected from the buds of annual branches collected during dormancy are also used for budding. However, grafting with this woody bud must be kept fresh under low humidity conditions. For branching, fully lignified or semi-woody branches are used for scioning, followed by picking. If you collect the cuttings in the field, you must effectively do a fresh and moisturizing work on the cuttings (applying the method of properly handling the base of the wax seal, burying the wet sand, spraying water, and kiln storage).

Fourth, grasp the timing of grafting. The weather when grafting flowers and trees is best when there is no windy sunny day. For tree species with injurious flow (such as peach and plum), grafting should be done at a time when the bleeding is low, or the method of cutting water at the base of the rootstock should be used for treatment; for tree species that secrete lipids (such as black pine), the secretion of resin should be avoided. During the exuberant period, grafting was performed during the slow period of resin secretion. The turpentine on the cutter was wiped with alcohol and the base of the scion was soaked in warm water at 40° C. to prevent the secreted resin from covering the cut, making the formation difficult to dock. In addition, tree species with high temperature and humidity requirements should be grafted in the greenhouse to increase the survival rate.
