Three major trends in blood glucose meters

Release date: 2014-08-06

So far, blood glucose meters have experienced five stages of development in technology. The first three generations basically use the light reflection method to achieve blood glucose concentration determination, and the fourth and fifth generation mainly rely on electrochemical methods. At present, the domestic mainstream blood glucose meter uses the electrochemical method. Compared with the fifth and fourth generations, some improvements have been made in details such as micro blood collection and multi-site blood collection.

It is true that there is a tendency for homogenization of blood glucose meters on the market today, and the basic functions are not very different. However, how to measure more finely and make patients more convenient to use has always been the goal pursued by all enterprises. Mobile internet, dynamic blood glucose monitoring, and non-invasive blood glucose monitoring are the three main directions for the development of current blood glucose meters.

Mobile blood glucose meter

The blood glucose meter makes full use of mobile internet technology, combined with mobile devices such as mobile phones and tablets, and gives the analysis results in real time and stores them in the cloud to facilitate doctors and self-monitoring. At present, the domestically listed products are mainly represented by the sugar nurse of Sannuo Bio.

Sannuo Bio's mobile blood glucose meter products are connected to the mobile phone through the headphone jack, and the test results will be stored and processed through the mobile phone software, with functions such as saving, automatic analysis, sharing and reminding. The company manages user information through the cloud platform of mobile blood glucose meters and uses big data to provide them with more value-added services. At present, Sannuo Bio is mainly responsible for the production and sales of mobile blood glucose meters, while product sales and data management are mainly operated by Sugar Protection Technology. Sugar Care Technology was established in July 2013 and was supported by the Sannuo Bio and Innovation Workshop Seed Fund in September of that year. In response to Sanno Bio's existing 5 million blood glucose meter use group, Sugar Protection Technology will continue its service and business model extension through APP.

In foreign countries, Israel's LabStyle Innovations' Dario mobile blood glucose monitor is also adopting a similar "device application service" innovative business model. Manage user information through the cloud platform, provide value-added services based on user test conditions, and develop a broader business model.

Dynamic Blood Glucose Monitoring (CGM)

At present, dynamic blood glucose monitoring mainly uses Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM). CGM products use a new bio-monitoring technology that generates an electrical signal when a patient's interstitial fluid oxidizes with glucose in the body through a subcutaneous sensor. The electrical signal is then converted to a blood glucose reading. Transmitted to the wireless receiver via the transmitter. The transmitter and receiver are durable and the sensor is a disposable device. To ensure measurement accuracy, current CGM products cannot be used independently, requiring 2 readings of blood readings per day.

In 2006, CGM began to go public. In the past few years, four companies in the CGM field have received FDA approvals, namely dexcom, Cygnus, Medtronic and Abbott. At present, Cygnus products have been discontinued, Abbott’s NavigatorI has also been discontinued, and Navigator II submitted an application to the FDA at the beginning of the year, and it is believed that it will not return to the US market as early as 2015. Currently, the CGMs sold in the North American market are only products of Medtronic and Dekang Medical. In China, Sannuo also has a research and development team to do the preliminary research of CGM.

CGM applications can alert hypoglycemia events during patient intensive glycemic control, thereby reducing the incidence of hypoglycemic events. However, dynamic blood glucose monitoring also has certain drawbacks, that is, the accuracy of the conventional blood glucose meter cannot be achieved. Therefore, it is still not a substitute for traditional blood glucose meters in the short term.

Non-invasive blood glucose monitoring

At present, the research teams of many companies in Israel, Germany, the United Kingdom and other countries are doing research on non-invasive blood glucose meters to overcome the pain caused by the blood in the blood glucose test, which must pierce the nerve-intensive fingertips. At the same time, because the wounds of diabetic patients are extremely susceptible to infection, it is extremely difficult to heal, and acupuncture also brings great hidden dangers to patients. The non-invasive blood glucose meter mainly tests the concentration of sugar in the blood by indirect monitoring of the glucose concentration in human saliva, tears, sweat and tissue fluid.

The main measurement theories of non-invasive blood glucose monitoring are:

(1) Measurement of blood glucose concentration in subcutaneous exudate tissue fluid: The current product is Cygnus Gluco Watch Biographer, which is a watch worn on the wrist and measures the sugar content in the tissue fluid exuded to the epidermis by subcutaneous tissue. The amount of blood sugar is obtained.

(2) Microwave blood glucose monitoring method: This method uses microwave to irradiate the human body. When the microwave encounters glucose in the blood, amplitude and phase changes occur, and the blood glucose level is calculated by analyzing the obtained microwave.

(3) Blood glucose detection using saliva: Some clinical medical research data indicate that the blood glucose concentration is directly proportional to the amylase contained in the saliva, so by measuring the amount of salivary amylase in the human oral cavity, the blood glucose concentration of the test body can be indirectly known. High and low.

Non-invasive blood glucose monitoring is affected by external environmental factors and time delays, and it is also necessary to frequently check blood glucose values for correction. Moreover, the technology involved is complicated, and the difficulty in correlating in vitro test indicators with blood glucose is not well solved. Therefore, there is still no mature product listed so far.
