US research and development of brain implant devices can help extract memory

Release date: 2014-07-16

The US Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency announced on the 9th that the Department of Defense will provide a total of $40 million in research funding over the next four years to fund the development of a wireless, implantable "neural prosthesis" for brain injury. Soldiers and other patients recover damaged memories. The project name is “Resume Active Memory”.

The brain "nerve prosthesis", as its name suggests, is an electronic implant device controlled by the brain's nerves, used to store new memories or extract old memories. The US Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency said in a statement that the University of California, Los Angeles, will receive $15 million to develop implantable "neural prosthetic" devices and then experimentally implant them into brain-injured patients. The brain's entorhinal cortex and hippocampus; and the University of Pennsylvania received $22.5 million to develop brain area surveillance and stimulation systems related to memory formation and storage; in addition, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory received $2.5 million in funding , provide technical support for the project.

"The launch of the 'Resume Active Memory' project provides an exciting opportunity to uncover many of the new features of human memory and to recognize the brain in ways never before possible," said Justin, Project Director, Advanced Research Projects Agency, US Department of Defense. Sanchez said, "We will apply the knowledge gained from the 'Resume Active Memory' project to develop new treatment options for brain damage."

According to the plan, this project will first recruit patients with epilepsy and Parkinson's disease as the research object, and study the neural mechanism of brain memory in time and space. Researchers will then develop brain-related computer models based on this, and the final development of the "neural prosthesis" is expected to be only one-tenth the size of existing neural devices.

The “Restoring Active Memory” project is also an important part of the “brain plan” announced by US President Barack Obama last year. However, due to the complexity of the human brain, some scientists doubt whether the project will see significant progress.

Roger Redondo, a neuroscientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told Science that human memory impairment can be caused by storage problems or extraction problems. If it is a storage problem, it may be that the related neural connections that form the memory have never been formed or destroyed. In this case, "the implanted device will not help"; and if the problem is extracted, brain stimulation may occur. Role, but to determine which brain cells contain memory and accurately stimulate, "will be an extremely difficult event."

In addition, some experts believe that too much reliance on patients with epilepsy may also be a problem because they are not enough to reflect all brain trauma problems.
